Netball no ‘obstruction’ to Football’s rise

November 25th, 2015

Roy Morgan Research has released positive news regarding women’s football, with continued growth during 2015 that has seen football overtake netball as the most popular sport for girls.

Over the last 12 months, football has overtaken swimming as the most popular sporting activity among Australian kids, with one in two children aged 6-13 now playing the Beautiful Game.

Furthermore, the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Research Young Australians Survey reveal that, for the first time, more girls are now playing football than netball.

While more Aussie kids are also taking part in athletics, cricket, netball and Australian Rules football than they were 12 months ago, the increases for these sports are negligible when compared with the boom in football participation.

“This is great news for the game and reflects the accessibility of our game to people of all ages and gender”, Northern NSW Football Community Football Manager, Peter Haynes said.

“We will continue to deliver opportunities in all areas especially for women and girls across Northern NSW in our ongoing commitment to maintain this positive increase in their representation in our game,” Haynes concluded.

Across Northern NSW over 12,600 female players are registered representing 21% of total registered players.

For 2015, 5,625 of these were under the age of 13, with this figure representing a 9.2% increase on the previous year’s figures.
